    The 15th-ranked University of North Carolina men's tennis team begins play in the Sweet 16 round of the 2012 NCAA Championship Friday night when the Tar Heels battle second-ranked Georgia at Henry Feild Stadium Friday at 7 p.m.

    No. 6 North Carolina used the big inning to its advantage Thursday night as the Tar Heels rolled to a 13-2 win over Virginia Tech at Boshamer Stadium. All nine starters scored a run in the rout and Kent Emanuel earned his eighth win of the year with seven innings of two-run ball.

    Football Season Opener Set For 12:30 p.m.

    North Carolina's season opener vs. Elon on Saturday, Sept. 1, will kickoff at 12:30 p.m. and will be televised by the ACC Network. The following week, the Tar Heels travel to Winston-Salem for a 3 p.m. kickoff vs. Wake Forest. That game will be televised by the Regional Sports Networks (RSN).

    The University of North Carolina aquatics program, under the direction of head coach Rich DeSelm, boasts 42 qualifiers, 21 men and 21 women, at the present time for U.S. and international Olympic Trials qualification meets in the next two months.

    Falgowski Earns Golden Fleece Honor

    Katelyn Falgowski, the 2011 National Field Hockey Player of the Year and a December 2011 UNC graduate, was inducted this spring into the Order of the Golden Fleece, the University's oldest honorary society. Members are selected based upon service to Carolina, as reflected in scholarship, motivation, creativity, loyalty, and leadership in academic and extracurricular pursuits.

    Catherine O'Donnell captured the individual championship of the NCAA West Regional which was played at Colorado National Golf Club in Erie, Col. Her victory in the event makes her the Tar Heel Performer of the Week for May 7-13, 2012.
