Baseball. Tar Heels Set For Season Opener

• No. 3 North Carolina will open its 2012 season Friday when the Tar Heels welcome in Atlantic 10 foe Xavier for a three-game series.

• Carolina is coming off its fifth College World Series appearance in the last six years and will look to begin the march towards another berth.

• The Tar Heels return 18 letterwinners from a year ago, including five position players that started and a pair of starting pitchers.

USA Baseball released its 2012 Preseason Golden Spikes Award Watch List on Thursday and it included a pair of Tar Heels as sophomores Kent Emanuel and Colin Moran were named to the initial list. Emanuel and Moran both earned Freshman All-America honors a year ago in helping Carolina to the College World Series for the fifth time in six years.

Three University of North Carolina players are among 15 Atlantic Coast Conference women's lacrosse student-athletes named to the 2012 Tewaaraton Trophy Watch List, as announced on Wednesday. Junior midfielder Kara Cannizzaro, senior attacker Becky Lynch and senior midfielder Laura Zimmerman made the list, as did four players from the University of Maryland, three from the University of Virginia, two from Boston College and three from Duke.

No. 25 North Carolina takes to the road again as it travels to Lafayettes, La., to compete in the 8th Annual Mardi Gras Classic hosted by the University of Louisiana-Lafayette Feb. 17-19. Along with the Tar Heels and Ragin' Cajuns, the field includes Northwestern, Northwestern State, UTEP and Louisiana tech. UNC opens the tournament with a 9:00 a.m. game against UTEP Friday, Feb. 17, followed by a 7:30 p.m. matchup with Northwestern State.
