Tar Heel Swimmers & Divers Bounce Back Into Win Column

DURHAM, N.C. - The Tar Heel swimming and diving teams bounced back into the win column Sunday afternoon by sweeping Duke at the Duke Aquatics Center. The UNC women beat Duke 171-124 and the men defeated the Blue Devils 161.5-137.5 as both Carolina teams extended their long winning streaks over the nearby rivals. Even after competing the day before against the defending ACC champions from the University of Virginia, the UNC swimmers and divers were able to pull out another win against the Duke Blue Devils. Carolina's men are now 9-1 overall on the season and 5-1 in the ACC. The women are now 8-2 on the campaign and 5-1 in the conference meet. The victories earned Carolina two points in the 2009-10 Carlyle Cup race, giving the Tar Heels a six-point advantage in the competition. The Carlyle Cup, now in its 10th year, is sponsored by Carlyle & Company and matches the two schools in head-to-head competition in 24 sports. UNC now leads this year's race 8.5 points to 2.5. Both UNC teams began the meet with first place finishes in the 400-yard medley relay giving them an early lead. Junior Joe Kinderwater and sophomore Wil Singley went 1-2 in the men's 1000 free. Singley had a strong swim, going a season best time by over 10 seconds. The UNC women dominated the 200-yard freestyle going 1-2-3, led by junior Rebecca Kane and followed by Eliza Butts and Ashley Howard, respectively. The men's 200 free looked similar to the women's race with the Heels going 1-2-3. Senior Hank Browning touched in first followed in second by Chip Peterson and in third by Steve Cebertowicz.
Senior Megan Steeves led the Tar Heel women in the 100-yard backstroke, finishing in first place with a time of 56.59. Steeves was followed in second by Rebecca Brooks and in third by Candace Cooper. After having three season best times against Virginia Saturday, sophomore Laura Moriarty continued her fast swimming by touching in first place in the 100-yard breaststroke in a season best time of 1:03.50. Junior Flynn Jones finished first on the men's side in the 100 breaststroke to pad Carolina's early lead. The UNC men swam a strong 200-yard butterfly with UNC entrants going 1-2-3 in the event. Senior Jason McLaughlin led the pack, finishing in first followed by Andy Brake and Vinny Pryor, respectively. Megan Steeves won her second individual event of the afternoon in the 50-yard freestyle by going 23.53, which was just a tenth of a second off her season best time. Stephanie Eisenring touched in second and Katie Nolan in third. Junior Rebecca Kane won the 100-yard freestyle making that her second individual event win of the afternoon. Senior Ashley Howard stepped up to win the 200-yard backstroke by one tenth of a second. Tommy Wyher took the win for the men in the event, his second on the afternoon after swimming on the victorious medley relay. The Tar Heels took first place in both the men and women's 200-yard breaststroke. Senior Alison Clemens claimed the victory for the women and junior Flynn Jones for the men as he claimed his second win of the meet. UNC continued the trend in the 500-yard freestyle with junior Katura Harvey touching in first for the women and sophomore Evan Reed for the men. Freshman Katie Nolan came in first in the 100-yard butterfly followed by teammate Laura Moriarty in second. Sophomore Tom Luchsinger had a season best time in the 200-yard individual medley, touching in first with time of 1:53.75 for the clinching points in the men's competition. The UNC women had the top two fastest relay swims in the 200-yard freestyle relay to finish the meet. The Tar Heels will next host the N.C. State Wolfpack for Senior Night February 5 at 6 p.m. at Koury Natatorium.
