CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - North Carolina's men's and women's swimming and diving teams opened up their Atlantic Coast Conference seasons Wednesday night at Koury Natatorium with wins over Duke 149-88 and 145-89, respectively. Each win was worth one point for North Carolina in the 2006-07 Carlyle Cup competition, the all-sports trophy sponsored annually by Carlyle & Company Fine Jewelers.

Carolina's two Carlyle Cup points cut Duke's lead in the 2006-07 Cup to 4.5 points to 3.5 points. The all-time series between the two schools is tied at 3-3 with UNC winning the past two Carlyle Cups.

Carolina won the first nine contested events in the meet on both the men's and women's side before exhibitioning one diving event and two swimming events each.

Philip Owen led the men's team with individual event wins in the 200-yard butterfly and 500-yard freestyle. Kristin Oxford led the UNC women's team with two events win, taking the 1000-yard freestyle and 500-yard freestyle.

UNC men are now 1-2, 1-0 ACC. Women are 3-1, 1-0 ACC.

UNC returns to the pool to host the 11-team Janis Hape Nike Cup Invitational at Koury Natatorium November 16-18.
