Carly Smith Named Progress Energy Performer Of The Week

Freshman swimmer Carly Smith broke the UNC record in the 100-yard backstroke against Virginia and had an individual race win and a relay win against Duke to earn Progress Energy Tar Heel of the Week honors for January 18-24, 2010. The Chapel Hill native recorded three season best times and had a pair of NCAA "B" qualifying times in the Tar Heels' dual meet against No. 11 Virginia. Smith broke UNC's 10-year-old school record in the 100-yard backstroke, going a career best 53.51 to break Christy Watkins' University record of 53.92 established in 2000. Smith also had near career bests in the 200-yard backstroke at 1:57.31 (1:57.12 career best) and in the 100-yard butterfly at 56.03 (55.18 career best). Smith also had one individual win and swam on a winning relay as the Carolina women defeated Duke 171-124. Other nominees: ZOYA JOHNSON Zoya Johnson performed a full twisting Yurchenko to score a 9.850 on vault and win the event. Johnson competed in her first meet of the season after recovering from surgery and helped the Tar Heels defeat William & Mary. The sophomore also finished in a tie for sixth place on uneven bars. Kwabena Keene Kwabena Keene broke his personal record in the shot put for the second time in the 2010 indoor season on Saturday, January 23rd, at the Kent Taylor UNC Classic with a first-place throw of 57-6 1/4. Keene was just .22 meters away from a NCAA provisional mark in the event. Both this personal best and the first of the season (55-5) were made at the Eddie Smith Field House in Chapel Hill. Jose Hernandez Hernandez played in the No. 2 singles spot on Sunday in his first two collegiate matches. Against Presbyterian's Matt Martin, Hernandez won 6-0, 6-0, and he defeated NCCU's Jose Fabara 6-1, 6-2. Hernandez also paired with Brennan Boyajian to win his first two collegiate doubles matches, one at the No. 3 spot and one at No. 2. Tommy Wyher Tommy Wyher had a standout meet against eighth-ranked Virginia as the junior swam two individual NCAA "B" qualifying times and helped the squad's 200-yard medley relay attain a third. Wyher's 20.99 butterfly split in the 200 medley relay led UNC to a first-place finish and a season best time of 1:29.03. Wyher also won the 100 back and fly events versus the Cavaliers with times of 47.91, a season best, and 48.20, respectively. The following day against Duke, Wyher had two first places and two second places as Carolina continued its long winning streak against the Blue Devils, 161.5-137.5.
