Pesacreta Named Progress Energy Performer Of The Week

Marie Pesacreta broke the Koury Natatorium record in the 200 individual medley to earn Progress Energy Tar Heel of the Week honors for Feb. 1-7, 2010. A sophomore swimmer from Chapel Hill, Pesacreta posted three career-best times over the weekend in the 100-yard breaststroke, 200-yard IM and the 400-yard IM. Both her 200-yard IM and 400-yard IM were NCAA "B" qualifying times. Pesacreta's time of 2:00.27 in the 200-yard IM broke Mary Ellen Blanchard's pool record of 2:00.36 set in 1989. Pesacreta placed first in the 200-yard IM at the College Cup and fourth in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:04.94. On Friday night, against the N.C. State Wolfpack, Pesacreta went 4:16.34 in her 400-yard IM, another career best time. Other nominees: CLAYTON PARROS Clayton Parros earned second place in the men's 400 meter dash trials championships at the New Balance Invitational in New York. Parros posted a collegiate best of 46.36 to earn the honors as well as a NCAA automatic qualifying mark. In the championship final race, Parros was just one-hundredth of a second away from first place. His time also places him third for the Carolina school record in the event, just 0.42 seconds away from the overall record. Jim Flannery Sophomore Jim Flannery finished first in both the 100 and 200-yard backstrokes in the Triangle College Cup. Flannery went a personal best time in the 100 backstroke with a time of 48.92 which is also a NCAA "B" qualifying time. Flannery also placed first in both backstroke events during the Tar Heels win Friday night against rival N.C. State. THOMAS WOOD Wood had a career high for both goals scored in a game with three and point in a game with four as he helped lead the Tar Heels to an 11-5 win in their season opener over Jacksonville. In the season opener, Wood had more than half the number of points that he had all of last season (seven).
