Kinderwater Named Progress Energy Performer Of The Week
Oct. 26, 2009
Joe Kinderwater led the UNC men's swimming and diving team to an upset win over the University of Georgia and is the Progress Energy Tar Heel of the Week for October 19-25, 2009. A junior from Lancaster, Pa., Kinderwater keyed the 156-144 win over the Bulldogs with a victory in the 1000-yard freestyle over 2009 NCAA champion Troy Prinsloo and a second-place finish in the 500-yard freestyle. Kinderwater outbattled Prinsloo, the 2009 NCAA champ in the 1650-yard freestyle, to win the event 9:05.20-9:05.98. Kinderwater's 9:05.20 is the top time in the event in the ACC this year. Kinderwater finished a second behind Prinsloo in the 500 free with Kinderwater's time of 4:30.70 being the third fastest time so far in the ACC. UNC's win over Georgia was the first for the Tar Heel men since the October 2004 dual meet between the two teams. Other nominees: CLAY DONATO Donato became the first Tar Heel men's tennis player since David Caldwell in 1993 to win the singles championship of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's Indoor Regional Championships when he defeated South Carolina's Diego Cubas 6-4, 6-7, 6-4 in the championship match last Monday afternoon at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center. Donato, who also made the doubles semifinals of the tournament, will play in next month's ITA Indoor Nationals in New Haven, Conn. Laura Moriarty Moriarty had UNC's only first-place finish and she also added a second-place finish in UNC's 161-120 loss to the 2009 NCAA runner-up Georgia Bulldogs. Moriarty had two season best times so far in the 2008-09 ACC season as she won the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:15.17 while finishing second in the 400-yard individual medley at 4:19.46. In her third event, Moriarty was third in the 200-yard butterfly at 2:02.36. BRANAGAN FULLER Senior Branagan Fuller posted 37 kills, 16 digs and three blocks in two matches this past weekend. Fuller led the Tar Heels in kills in both matches, including a Carolina career-high 16 in a clean 3-0 sweep over Miami. Fuller, a transfer from UNC Greensboro, registered a career high 32 kills in her three year career as a Spartan. Sunday Carolina fell to #17 Florida State 3-1, but Fuller again led the way with 11 kills, nine digs and three blocks. The senior has posted 56 kills in her last five matches. In her previous nine matches, the Murrieta, Calif. native posted only 44 kills. Carolina is 11-10 overall and 7-3 in league play as they are tied for third in the ACC. JORDAN GRAYE Senior defender Jordan Graye netted his first career goal and helped anchor a defense that limited Virginia Tech to just two shots on goal in NorthCarolina's 1-0 win Saturday. In the 48th minute, Graye took a pass from Cameron Brown and fired a shot from just outside the 18 into the right side of the net for the game-winning strike. Defensively, UNC limited the Hokies to just nine total shots en route to its seventh shutout on the season. Graye has a career best four points this season. JACK FIELDS
Tar Heel golfer Jack Fields tied for second place at the UNCG Bridgestone
Golf Collegiate this past weekend. Fields' 10-under-par 206 total was just
one behind the champion. Two rounds were played on Saturday as Fields shot
an even-par 72 in the morning round and a blistering nine-under 63 in the
afternoon. In Sunday's final round, he fired a one-under 71. Fields carded
three eagles during the 54-hole event - two in the second round and one in
the final round. The two on Saturday came on the par-5 18th and 4th holes
(his 14th and 18th holes respectively). His eagle on Sunday came on the
par-4 16th hole.
