CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -
Sarah Stankavage, student assistant for UNC Athletic Communications, continued the Q&A series with senior Ashley Howard. Howard is a great backstroker, mid-distance and distance freestyler from Durham, N.C. who currently holds the school record for the 200-yard backstroke.
Sarah Stankavage: What is it like being at school, yet so close to home? Do your parents come to every home meet?
Ashley Howard:Being at school yet so close to home is great. I am able to distance myself enough to get the full college experience, but I also have the opportunity to go home if I want to. I really enjoy the fact that my parents are able to attend every home meet. It is really nice that it is so convenient for them to come cheer, especially since they have been supporting my swimming since I was very young.
Sarah Stankavage: What is one piece of advice you would give an incoming freshman?
Ashley Howard: One piece of advice I would give an incoming freshman is to stay on top of your school work and use the resources provided to you. The academic center and support staff are great. They can really help you with your school work and guide you in the right direction academically.
Sarah Stankavage: Since you are a very versatile swimmer, what is your favorite event and why?
Ashley Howard: My favorite event is the 200 backstroke. Growing up the 200 back has always been my favorite. I like the stroke itself, and the 200 is my favorite distance.
Sarah Stankavage: What is your favorite Mexican restaurant and your favorite Mexican food?
Ashley Howard: My favorite Mexican restaurant is Bandidos and my favorite Mexican food is fajitas.
Sarah Stankavage: If you could meet one character from the Harry Potter series, who would it be and why?
Ashley Howard: I would want to meet Dumbledore because I think he is mysterious and full of lots of secrets.
