North Carolina saw more personal-best results Sunday at the Wolfpack Last Chance meet, making for a successful weekend of last-chance qualifying meets for the Tar Heels. With the improved marks from this weekend, UNC hopes to improve on individual NCAA rankings and qualify additional athletes for the NCAA East Regional Championships May 24-26.

The Tar Heels recorded several personal and season best times Saturday at the inaugural Virginia Challenge, led by senior Ashley Verplank and sophomore Isaac Presson. At today's meet, and again at Sunday's Wolfpack Last Chance Meet, the Tar Heels are seeking to make and improve on qualifying standards for the NCAA East Regional Championships, which will be held at the end of the month.

Eight Tar Heels were named to the 2012 All-ACC Academic Indoor Track and Field teams, which were announced Friday by the Atlantic Coast Conference. UNC had three men and five women named to the teams, including seniors Parker Smith and Ashley Verplank, who each received the honor for the third time in their careers.

Tar Heel Spotlight: Senior Ashley Verplank

Senior Ashley Verplank, a native of Bloomington, Ill., is this week's Tar Heel Spotlight for the Carolina track and field team. Verplank won the 1,500 to claim her first individual ACC title at the ACC Outdoor Championships last month, and also took fifth in the 800. She is currently ranked No. 27 in the 1,500 (4:19.10) and No. 37 in the 800 (2:06.66) this season in the NCAA.

Track's Lipsey Named Tar Heel Performer of the Week

Javonte Lipsey of the University of North Carolina men's track team has been named the Tar Heel Performer of the Week for April 16-22, 2012. The freshman from Michigan led the Tar Heels to a fourth place finish in the ACC Championships and won the men's 400-meter hurdles title.

UNC Participates In ACC Community Connections Outreach

Nineteen Atlantic Coast Conference student-athletes from 11 different schools took part in an ACC Community Connections outreach event Friday morning, including UNC sophomore Mali Cali. The student-athletes, in town for the ACC Outdoor Track & Field Championships and the ACC Men's Lacrosse Championship, met with almost 300 first through fifth graders from Hollymead Elementary, a local Charlottesville, Va., school.
