Felnagle, Tar Heel Women Perform Well At New Balance Invitational

New York, N.Y. - The Tar Heel women placed first in the 4x200 meter relay with a time of 1:36.71 in front of South Carolina and Seton Hall Saturday at the New Balance Invitational at Armory Track in New York, N.Y. ACC schools Duke and Florida State also competed at the Armory Track this weekend. 10-time All-America Brie Felnagle placed first in the women's 3000 meter run championship with a time of 9:04.58 and also automatically qualified for the NCAA's. Felnagle's time was just four seconds shy of her personal best. Junior All-America Lauren Holesh placed seventh (9:26.88) and senior Addie Bracy finished fifteenth (9:51.02) in the same event. All-America Austin Davis turned in an impressive performance in triple jump as he cleared an indoor personal best of 52-6 as the sophomore finished fifth overall. In the women's triple jump college freshmen Michelle Newman placed first after a jump of 12.79 meters, earning a provisional mark and a new personal best. Junior Callie Pottinger placed seventh (2:09.42) in the women's 800 meter run, as freshmen Tasha Stanley finished thirteenth (2:11.84) in the same event. Sophomore Charles Cox finished third in the men's 400 meter dash with a time of 47.46, a day after qualfying first in the same event with a time of 47.02. Cox finished behind two standout runners from Baylor. In the men's pole vault three Tar Heels turned in solid performances - Parker Smith finished third (4.95m), freshmen Scott Houston and senior Daniel Keller placed tenth (4.65m).
In men's action Friday, sophomore Travis Leonard finished third in the long jump turning in a new personal best with a clearance of 6-8.Tar Heel sophomore Adam Cunningham finished eleventh in the men's 3000 meter run with a time of 8:13.12. In the men's 5000 meter run sophomore Evan Watchempino finished ninth with a time of 14:34.97. In the same event, senior Brock Baker finished thirteenth (14:37.94) and junior Zachary Dawson finished eighteenth (15:10.31). In the women's 200 meter dash Saturday, junior Vanneisha Ivy fell just three-tenths of a second short of qualifying with a time of 24.46. Senior Shardae Anderson finished behind Ivy (24.86) in the same event, as did freshmen Zoey Russell (25.42) and junior Ashley Hill (25.50) In women's action Friday, junior Ashley Hill won the long jump with a jump of 6.04 meters just a meter shy of her personal best. Hill, who competes in both jumps and sprints, finished seventh in the long jump at the ACC outdoor Championships a year ago. Freshmen Becky O'Brien finished third in the shot put with a throw of 15.48. Junior Vanneisha Ivy fell short of qualifying in the 60 meter hurdles with a time of 8.66, as All-America LaToya James finished sixth in the 60 meter hurdle consolation with a time of 8.37. Senior Morgan Stengel finsihed the 3000 meter run with a time of 10:11.14, falling ten spots short of qualifying. The Tar Heel men and women return to action next weekend at the Dick Taylor Carolina Invitational in Chapel Hill, N.C. and the Tyson Invitational in Fayetteville, Arkansas. |
