    RALEIGH, N.C. - The North Carolina track and field teams wrapped up competition at the Raleigh Relays and Liberty Asics Collegiate Invitational on Saturday. Erek Latzka picked up a fifth place finish in the javelin throw in Raleigh, while Alexandra Coppadge claimed the heptathlon title at Liberty. The Tar Heels will split up and head to Texas, Duke and North Carolina A&T next weekend.

    Coppadge posted 4,864 points in the heptathlon at the Liberty Invite to win the event, just ahead of teammate Gabby Gioia who tallied 4,569 points to claim second place. Coppadge took second in the long jump (17-00.50, 612 points), third in the javelin throw (100-10, 490 points) and fifth in the 800-meter run (2:31.09, 679 points) for the win. Gioia posted similar results with a third place finish in the long jump (16-06.00, 567 points), second in the javelin (115-07, 576 points) and fourth in the 800 (2:30.84, 682 points) for the second place overall finish. Also competing at Liberty was Matthew Villemain who posted a second place finish in the decathlon. Villemain took the top spot in the 110-meter hurdles (16.56, 671 points), second in the discus (89-07, 412 points), first in the pole vault (12-11.75, 606 points), third in the javelin (113-08, 365 points) and closed with a great showing in the 1500-meter dash (4:46.86, 638 points) en route to falling just 67 points shy of winning the event.

    In Raleigh, Tyra Johnson finished fifth overall in the 100-meter dash as she posted a time 12.08 in the final, while Ashley Hill finished 12th with a time of 12.51. Dominique Jackson posted a time of 2:15.19 in the 800-meter run for a sixth place finish. While in the 1500, Callan Fike raked in another Carolina top 10 finish when she posted a time of 4:36.98 for a fifth place finish. In the steeplechase, the duo of Morgan Stengel and Courtlin LaReau both finished in the top five with Stengel coming out in the third place with time of 10:52.72. LaReau was not far behind with a time of 10:57.14 for fifth place.

     

     

    A foursome of Tar Heels claimed the top spot in the 4x100 relay as the group crossed the line in 46.29 for the victory. In the lone field event for the women, Norjai Palma threw the hammer 148-01 for an 11th place finish while Mary Angell finished 26th with a throw of 116-06.

    On the men's side, Matt Hamrick turned in a seventh place showing in the 1500 with a time of 4:00.51 ahead of Sam Pompei's time of 4:04.87 which placed him 19th. Nick Krouse posted a time of 4:06.65 for 28th in the 1500 as well. John Curtiss finished 12th in the invitational section of the 1500 with a time of 3:55.73, just ahead of Adam Cunningham who posted a time of 3:56.02 for 14th. Alex Ray also posted a sub-4:00 time in teh 1500 with 3:59.13 for 21st. Ian Bracy gave Carolina another top five finish when he finished fourth in the steeplechase with a time of 9:30.57. The Carolina 4x800 relay team crossed the line in 7:41.35 for a third place finish in the event. The 4x1500 relay team finished ninth with a time of 16:02.20.
