Tar Heels Wrap Up Competition At Duke Invitational

DURHAM, N.C. - The North Carolina track and field teams competed at the Duke Invitational in Durham on Saturday and were led by Amanda Nappi who took second in he javelin throw. Several other Tar Heels were in action on Saturday, including Dominique Jackson who placed sixth in the 800 en route to earning a regional mark. The Tar Heels will host the Tony Waldrop Invitational next weekend and honor their seniors during the event. Nappi recorded a throw of 41.37m (135-09) to finish just a shade behind Kent State's Bekah Stoltz in the javelin. Nappi missed a regional qualifying mark by just over two meters. In the shot put, Kimberly Warren finished sixth with a toss of 13.55m (44-05.50) while teammate Norjai Palma took home 10th as she posted a mark of 13.08m (42-11.00). In women's track action, Dominique Jackson finished sixth in the 800-meter run as she clocked a time of 2:09.42. Jackson's time earned her a regional qualifying mark. Alex Coppadge finished 10th in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 14.91, while Gabby Gioia was right behind her with a time of 14.97 for 11th place. The duo also competed in the 400-meter hurdles with Gioia coming out on top with a 16th place finish in a time of 1:05.17. Gioia also placed 13th in the javelin with a toss of 35.41m (116-02) in preparation for the heptathlon. Ashley Haislip claimed a top 10 spot in the high jump as she cleared 1.65m (5-05.00).
On the men's side, Adam Smith claimed a fifth place finish in the 800 when he crossed the line in 1:52.73, just ahead of teammate Andrew Rotz who clocked in at 1:53.48 to claim eighth place. Adam Cunningham was not far behind Smith and Rotz as he crossed the line in 1:54.94 to place 20th. John Curtiss (28th, 1:55.68) and Jamie Reichlin (36th, 1:57.67) also competed for Carolina in the 800.
Parker Smith cleared 4.80m (15-09.00) in the pole vault en route to a third place finish. Ian Reynolds claimed a sixth place finish in the shot put as he recorded a throw of 16.09m (52-09.50), while Kyle Goodman also recorded a top 10 finish with a throw of 14.79m (48-06.25). |
