Flanagan Wins Miami Half Marathon In Record Time

MIAMI, Fla. - Former Tar Heel Shalane Flangan set a new Florida state record as she ran the fastest women's half-marathon earlier this month. The Olympian and American Record holder won the women's Dodge Latin Music Miami Beach Half Marathon in 1:09:58 and took fourth overall. Flanagan is preparing for the U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials, which will be held in January in Houston. Earlier this year, she took third individually and helped Team USA to its second straight bronze team finish at the 2011 IAAF World Cross Country Championships in Punta Umbria, Spain. In August, Flanagan took seventh in the 10,000 at the 2011 IAAF World Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Daegu, South Korea. A 2004 alumnus, Flanagan was the 2008 Olympic bronze medalist in the 10,000 meters. A native of Pittsboro, N.C., she holds the American records in the outdoor 10,0000 meters and indoor 3,000 and 5,000-meter events. Flanagan was a 15-time NCAA All-America runner during her time at Carolina and a two-time USA Outdoor 5,000 meter champion. She was a volunteer coach at UNC during the 2009-10 school year.
