    Selected in the 17th round (523rd overall) in the 2009 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft by the Chicago White Sox but elected to attend North Carolina • Standout outfielder for coaches Pat Smith and Jason Battle at Rocky Mount • Rated the nation's No. 10 prep prospect by Baseball America in the fall of 2008 • Named the Gatorade North Carolina Player of the Year as a senior • Two-time all-state selection and a three-time all-conference pick • Selected as Rocky Mount Telegram's All-Area Hitter of the Year twice • Participated in the AFLAC and Under Armour All-America games in the summer of 2008, winning MVP honors in the AFLAC game at Dodger Stadium • Led Rocky Mount to the 2008 North Carolina 3-A state title and was named MVP of the state tournament • Also a standout football player as a defensive back and kick returner, earning all-conference honors at two positions • Played basketball as well • A-B Honor Roll Student • Led the Midland Redskins to the 2009 Connie Mack World Series title and earned a spot on the all-tournament team.
