Drafted in the 40th round (1,202nd pick) by the Kansas City Royals in the 2009 Major League Baseball First Year Player Draft but elected to attend North Carolina • Four-year letterman as a pitcher for coach Mitch Wiles at Shawnee Mission South • As a senior, earned first-team all-conference and all-Kansas City metro honors • Pitched in the Kansas all-star game • Also played basketball for two seasons • Four-year honor roll student • Pitched for the Mac-N-Seitz Athletics of the M.I.N.K. Summer Collegiate League in 2009 and was named the league's No. 1 prospect by Baseball America.
