Woodard assists in all areas of the UNC program. In addition to his on-field work, Woodard works closely with the Tar Heels' strength and conditioning program and with the team's nutritionist regarding all team meals. He also assists with on-campus recruiting and other administrative duties. Woodard was a big part in working with Carolina's pitchers during the 2011 season as Patrick Johnson became just the fourth pitcher in school history to register at least 13 wins in a season and went on to be drafted in the 25th round by the Colorado Rockies. Carolina racked up the third most strikeouts in the country in 2011 in Woodard's first full year on teh Carolina staff. Woodard joined the Tar Heels before the start of the postseason in 2010. Woodard, a native of Charlotte, N.C., was the 2006-2007 recipient of the Patterson Medal, given to the University of North Carolina's most outstanding student-athletes. The Charlotte native finished 34-5 as a Tar Heel with a perfect 22-0 record at Boshamer Stadium. A three-time All-ACC pick, Woodard is the only pitcher in Carolina history to rank in the career top 10 in wins, winning percentage, innings pitched and strikeouts. He also ranks among top 10 in Atlantic Coast Conference history in victories and innings pitched. Woodard currently sits in first place in Carolina annals in wins with his mark of 34. The right-hander led Carolina to back-to-back appearances in the championship round of the College World Series in 2006 and 2007. Woodard graduated from UNC in December of 2008 with a bachelor's degree in management and society. A 20th round selection by the San Diego Padres in the 2007 MLB Draft, Woodard went 3-3 in his first year of professional baseball with a 4.78 ERA in 37 2/3 innings of work. Woodard made a pair of appearances at Triple A Portland in his rookie campaign. In his first full season in the minors Woodard threw 105 innings over 43 appearances at Single A, High Single A and Triple A striking out 87 compared to just 24 walks. Woodard made four appearances in the 2009 season before retiring from professional baseball. |
