CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -
Right-hander Andrew Carraway tossed seven strong innings, and Steven Proscia and Jarrett Parker homered to lead No. 8 Virginia past No. 5 North Carolina, 5-2, Saturday at Boshamer Stadium. All-America Dustin Ackley belted his sixth home run and had two hits to pace the Tar Heels (19-6, 6-4 ACC).
Carraway (4-0) held Carolina to just three hits and one walk over seven innings, while striking out three. Matt Packer allowed one run over the final two innings in relief.
Carolina starter Adam Warren (3-2) suffered his second straight loss - and just the fourth of his career - after allowing four runs on a career-high eight hits over 6 2/3 innings. He struck out five and did not walk a batter. Garrett Davis and Nate Striz tossed scoreless relief outings.
In addition to the homers, Parker and Proscia both finished 2-for-4 with two RBI. Dan Grovatt was 3-for-4 with three singles for Virginia (22-3, 6-3 ACC).
Ackley went 2-for-4 with a solo home run for two of Carolina's four hits on the afternoon. With the two hits, Ackley moved into fifth place on the Tar Heels' career list.
Kyle Seager wasted little time extending his season-best hitting streak to 15 games with a second-inning double, and Garrett Gore connected on his second home run in the ninth inning.
After UNC had a runner on second with no one out in the second and fourth innings and could not score, Virginia broke through in the fifth when Tyler Cannon was hit by a pitch, John Hicks singled and both runners came around to score. Corey Hunt drove in the first run with a single just out of the reach of Levi Michael through the right side, and Parker followed with a sacrifice fly to left.
Proscia doubled the lead for the Cavs in the sixth with his fourth homer of the season. Grovatt singled for the third time in the game and came around to score when Proscia sent a 1-0 offering from Warren out to left center.
Ackley answered for the Tar Heels in the bottom of the inning when he smacked an opposite field homer to left on a 1-0 Carraway pitch to cut the lead to 4-1.
Parker quickly got that run back for UVA in the seventh with a solo homer to left on the second pitch thrown by reliever Logan Munson for a 5-1 Cavalier advantage.
Gore's solo homer off Packer in the ninth trimmed the Virginia lead to the 5-2 final margin.
The Tar Heels and Cavaliers will close out the series at 1 p.m. Sunday.
