Coyle, Johnson Shine In FWS Opener
Oct. 13, 2009
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Freshman second baseman Tommy Coyle went 3-for-3 with two runs and two stolen bases, and junior right-hander Patrick Johnson allowed just two hits over 5 2/3 innings in a 4-3 win for the Blue team Tuesday in game one of North Carolina's intra-squad Fall World Series at Boshamer Stadium. Coyle, a native of Chalfont, Pa., singled in each of his first three at-bats and walked in the sixth to reach base in all four plate appearances. Ryan Graepel was 2-for-3 with a walk and drove in two runs with a third-inning single for the Blue squad, while Greg Holt was 2-for-3 with a solo homer to pace the White team, which was held to just three hits on the day. Johnson gave up three runs, only two of which were earned, struck out three and walked two to pick up the win. Freshman lefty Zach Bernard tossed a scoreless frame in relief, and classmate Cody Stiles picked up the final out to earn the save. Junior right-hander Matt Harvey got the start for the White team and struck out six in 4 2/3 innings. He fanned the side in the first and allowed four runs on six hits and two walks. Freshmen Chris Munnelly and R.C. Orlan followed Harvey with scoreless relief outings of at least an inning. The Blue squad got on the board in the third thanks to the two-run single by Graepel. Jeff May and Coyle singled to lead off the inning, and Brian Goodwin moved both runners into scoring position with a bunt down the third base line. After Harvey picked up his fifth strikeout, Graepel guided a single back through the box and into center field for a 2-0 lead. The White team came right back to tie the score in the bottom of the inning with two of its own. Josh Leemhuis reached on a fielder's choice, Mike Cavasinni singled and Johnson balked both runners into scoring position. Ben Bunting plated Leemhuis with a sacrifice fly to center, and an errant throw in an attempt to get Cavasinni at third on the play allowed the tying run to cross the plate. Coyle jump-started the go-ahead rally for the Blue team in the fifth when he singled for the third time, stole second and scored when Dillon Hazlett lined a single to right to end the day for Harvey. With Munnelly on in relief, the Blue team went on to load the bases, and Hazlett scored from third on a wild pitch for a 4-2 lead. Holt immediately trimmed the lead to a single run in the bottom of the inning when he hit the first pitch he saw from Johnson off the scoreboard in left center for a solo home run and the only extra-base hit of the afternoon. Fans should note the time change for Wednesday's game, as the series continues at 2:30 p.m. tomorrow. Admission to all games is free of charge.
