    CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - North Carolina junior outfielder Mike Cavasinni will miss the 2008 season due to a left knee injury, head coach Mike Fox announced Friday. The Huntersville, N.C., native underwent successful surgery to repair a torn left anterior cruciate ligament Wednesday at UNC Hospitals by Dr. Alex Creighton. Cavasinni will redshirt this season will have two years of eligibility remaining.

    "We all feel badly for Michael and we will miss him on the field greatly," said Fox. "However, he will still be a big part of our team with his positive attitude and constant energy in the dugout. I have no doubt that Michael will work as hard as he can during rehabilitation and be back at full strength as soon as possible."

    Cavasinni is a .303 career hitter with 60 runs scored and 21 RBI in 102 career games, including 55 starts.

    The former North Mecklenburg High School standout was limited for much of last season due to an eye injury suffered in the preseason, but was a catalyst during the Tar Heels' run to the College World Series in 2006 as a freshman. He hit .317 and led UNC with 16 stolen bases and 12 sacrifice bunts. Cavasinni had a career-best five hits at Alabama June 9, 2006 in the NCAA Tuscaloosa Super Regional.
