Seager Named Progress Energy Performer Of The Week

Carolina second baseman Kyle Seager hit .526 and had four multi-hit games and is the Progress Energy Tar Heel of the Week for March 31-April 5, 2008. The sophomore from Kannapolis, N.C., led Carolina to a 4-1 week and a series victory over No. 14 Georgia Tech by batting 10 for 19 with seven RBI and three doubles.

He extended his career-best hitting streak to 27 games, which ranks as the fourth longest in school history. He went 2-for-4 with two RBI in Tuesday's win over UNC Greensboro and matched a career high with three RBI on three hits in the first game of Sunday's doubleheader against the Jackets. Seager raised his season average to .405 this week and ranks among the ACC leaders with 40 RBI on the season. He has already tallied an NCAA-best 19 doubles and needs just seven more to set a single-season school record.

Taylor recorded 10 goals and one assist in a pair of Carolina wins over the weekend at the ACC/American Lacrosse Challenge in Chapel Hill. She had a career-high six goals in Friday's 22-12 win over Ohio State, also adding an assist as the Tar Heels set a season high in goals. She had a team-high four goals, two ground balls, a draw control and two caused turnovers in the 14-9 win over Penn State on Sunday.

Alex White
Baseball, RHP
Sophomore, Greenville, N.C.

Sophomore right-hander Alex White fired seven shutout innings to lead the Tar Heels past No. 14 Georgia Tech 8-1 Friday. The Greenville, N.C., native held the Yellow Jackets to just five hits and one walk, while striking out eight. White improved his record to 5-2 and lowered his ERA to 1.93 with his second straight victory. He has 19 strikeouts over his last two starts and now owns 43 Ks on the season to just 12 walks in a team-high 37 1/3 innings.

CHRIS KEARNEY
Men's Tennis
Sophomore, Irvine, Calif.

Sophomore Chris Kearney went 3-0 in singles, dropping only 12 games in the process, and went 2-1 in doubles, to lead North Carolina to a 2-1 record on the week, improving the Tar Heels to 16-4 overall on the season and 6-1 in the ACC. Kearney defeated NC State's Chris Welte 6-2, 6-3 in a 5-2 UNC win, downed Sanan Singh 6-2, 6-2 in a 5-2 loss to No. 1 Virginia and beat Yoann Re of Virginia 6-1, 6-2 in Carolina 5-2 victory over Virginia Tech. With doubles partner Taylor Fogleman, the duo upset No. 9-ranked Cavady and Weinacker of NC State 8-2 and also won against Virginia Tech 8-5. Kearney's only loss was the Fogleman to Virginia nationally No. 1-ranked doubles team by a close 8-6 score. Kearney is now 16-5 in singles and 16-7 in doubles this season.

KEVIN O'CONNELL
Men's Golf
Freshman, Cary, N.C.

Kevin O'Connell tied for eighth place at the Administaff Augusta State Invitational played at the Champions Retreat Golf Club in Evans, Ga. O'Connell carded an even par 72 in the first round followed by a three-under-par 69 in the second round. His three-under 141 total was seven strokes behind Lucas Lee of UCLA who carded a 134. The event was shortened to a 36-hole tournament after heavy rains forced most of Saturday's second round to be played on Sunday.

The Tar Heels finished in fifth place after firing a two-under 286 in the first round followed by a one-over 289 in the second round for a one-under 575 total. UCLA won the team title with a blazing 24-under 552 total. The Bruins fired an amazing 20-under 268 in the final round to run away from the 18-team field.

Carolina's next event is the Wolfpack Intercollegiate which will be played April 11-13 in Wallace, N.C.
