Iannetta, Snyder On World Series Rosters
Oct. 24, 2007
BOSTON - Former North Carolina standouts Chris Iannetta and Kyle Snyder will be on the active World Series rosters for the Colorado Rockies and Boston Red Sox, respectively, when the Fall Classic kicks off Wednesday at Fenway Park. This year marks the first since 1947 that two Tar Heels will be on opposite sides of the World Series. Iannetta and Snyder are the first players coached by UNC head coach Mike Fox to make an active World Series roster and are the first former Tar Heels to have a chance to play in the World Series since Walt Weiss was a member of the 1999 Atlanta Braves. For Iannetta, who was an All-America catcher and UNC and a finalist for the Johnny Bench Award in 2004, the series opener in Boston marks a homecoming for the Providence, R.I., native. He told the Providence Journal that ... "It's been an exciting ride and it's been fun to be a part of. Experiencing the whole thing has been awesome. It's really hard to explain in a few words." After struggling early this season, Iannetta hit .348 in has last 16 games with the Rockies and finished with a .218 average, four home runs and 27 RBI. For Snyder, who was a first-round pick out of Carolina by the Kansas City Royals, the inclusion on the World Series roster caps a successful season as a long-reliever for Boston. He replaced Tim Wakefield on the Red Sox roster and was not active for either the ALDS or ALCS. According to today's Boston Globe, "his inclusion continues a triumphant first full season in the big leagues that came after Snyder had four major arm surgeries, two on his elbow and two on his shoulder, that threatened to end the career of the No. 1 draft choice of the Kansas City Royals in 1999. Snyder was 2-3 with a 3.81 ERA in 46 appearances for the Sox, mostly as a long man."
In 1947, former Tar Heels George Stirnweiss and Clyde King were on the 27-man rosters of the New York Yankees and Brooklyn Dodgers, respectively. The Yankees won the series in seven games with Stirnweiss batting .259 (7-27) with a triple and three RBI. |
