    No. 6 national seed North Carolina learned Monday it will host East Carolina, St. John's and Cornell in the 2012 NCAA Chapel Hill Regional when the 64-team tournament field was announced on ESPNU.

    North Carolina claimed its fourth ACC Coastal crown in the last seven years and finished the year with 15 wins in 16 tries which earned the Tar Heels one of 16 NCAA Regional hosts for the 2012 NCAA Baseball Championship, the NCAA announced Sunday.

    Freshman Adam Griffin slapped a run-scoring single with the bases loaded in the 12th inning Saturday night to kick start a four-run inning as No. 5 North Carolina (44-14) downed NC State (39-17), 4-0, in front of a record crowd of 10,229. Junior closer Michael Morin retired the final 14 batters he faced to secure the first-ever extra inning shutout in ACC Tournament history.

    Grayson Atwood hit a game-tying two-run home run in the seventh but Dale Carey answered with a two-run shot of his own to lead sixth-seeded Miami to a 5-3 win over second-seeded North Carolina Thursday afternoon at NewBridge Bank Park. Carolina drops to 1-1 in round-robin pool play but can still advance to the ACC title game with a win over NC State Saturday night.

    The North Carolina pitching staff threw its eighth shutout of the year and senior Jacob Stallings continued his hot streak at the plate as the No. 5 Tar Heels opened the ACC Tournament with a 6-0 win over Wake Forest (32-23) Wednesday night at Greensboro's NewBridge Bank Park. The win was Carolina's (43-13) 14th straight which is tied for the longest streak in the nation.
