Went past the 1,000-point mark with 24-point effort vs. Clemson in ACC championship game • Enters the season having scored 1,092 points, an average of 14.2 points a game • Became the 60th Tar Heel to score 1,000 career points, an NCAA record • Now 53rd at UNC in scoring • Shooting 83.0 percent from the free throw line (146 for 176) • Is ninth alltime at Carolina in free throw percentage • Has made at least one three-pointer in 66 games, two or more 45 times and three or more 22 times • Has averaged 16.8 points and shot 53.7 percent from the floor in six ACC Tournament games, all UNC victories.
Made himself eligible for the 2008 NBA Draft but did not sign with an agent and chose to return to school on June 16, retaining his collegiate eligibility.
SOPHOMORE SEASON (2007-08)
Scored 647 points, the 16th highest single-season total in UNC history • Second-team All-ACC selection (eighth-leading vote-getter) • USBWA all-district selection • Two-time ACC Player of the Week selection (after Ohio State/Kentucky games and Kent State/Clemson games) • Combined with Tyler Hansbrough to score 1,529 points, the highest scoring duo in Carolina single-season history (previous mark was 1,459 by Antawn Jamison and Shammond Williams in 1997-98) • Led UNC in three-pointers with 78 and was second on the Tar Heels and seventh in the ACC in scoring at 16.6 points per game • Scored 20 or more points nine times, including 36 at Clemson, 28 vs. Clemson in double-OT home win and 24 vs. Clemson in ACC championship game • Averaged 29.3 points in three games against the Tigers • Made 36 of 84 (.429) from beyond the arc in the last 16 contests.• Made three or more three-pointers 14 times • Sixth in the ACC in field goal percentage (.467) • Scored in double figures 34 times, second-most on the team • Second on the team in field goal attempts with 507 (13.0 per game) • Averaged 17.2 points on the road.
Game Highlights
Pre-ACC: Scored 20 points, more than any game as a freshman, in the season-opening win at Davidson, including eight of UNC's 12 points in a stretch late in the second half in which the Tar Heels rallied from three points behind to take the lead for good • Scored 19 points, 14 in the first half, and made three 3FG in the win over South Carolina State • Scored 11 of his 17 points in the second half in the win over Old Dominion • Hit three second-half three-pointers as UNC outscored the Monarchs 56-43 after the break • Selected to the Las Vegas Invitational All-Tournament Team after scoring 15 points in the championship game win over BYU • Had nine second-half points, including a game-breaking three-pointer from beyond the pro line with 2:33 to play that gave UNC a 67-61 lead • Led all scorers with 23 points at Ohio State • Long three-pointer as the shot clock expired with 3:28 to play gave UNC a nine-point lead • Grabbed a career-high eight rebounds • Had 18 points and two assists in win at Kentucky • Returned to Philadelphia for his "home" game and had 13 points, two assists and two steals in the win over Penn at the Palestra • Had 17 points and five rebounds and was UNC's defensive player of the game against UC Santa Barbara.
January: Nailed the game-winning three-pointer with 0.4 seconds left in overtime to cap a career-high 36 points and give Carolina a 90-88 come-from-behind win at Clemson • Scored 20 points in the second half and seven of UNC's nine points in overtime • Was 11 for 19 from the floor, 5 of 8 from three-point and 9 for 9 from the line • Most points by a Tar Heel guard since Joseph Forte had 38 against Tulsa on Nov 11, 2000 • Three-pointer with 2:28 left in regulation began comeback from 81-74 deficit • ACC Player of the Week on Jan. 7.
February: Was 3 for 14 from the floor and 0 for 6 from three-point range in the loss to Duke • Most attempts without a made three-pointer in his UNC career • Second-highest scoring game of his career with 28 points in the double overtime win over Clemson • Matched his career-high with five three-pointers, including three he hit in a first-half span in which he scored 11 straight UNC points • With UNC trailing 70-58, he scored eight of UNC's next 10 points • Driving layup with 51 seconds left in the second OT gave UNC a 100-93 lead • Scored 19 at Virginia, including a bank shot from close range with 1:39 to play that gave UNC a 73-68 lead • Had 21 points and tied his high with eight rebounds in the 84-70 win at NC State • Three-pointer just before the end of the first half gave UNC a 34-31 lead at the break, its first lead since the 7:15 mark • Scored 17 points against Wake Forest, including a three-pointer made while practically falling out of bounds in front of the Wake bench to beat the buzzer at the end of the first half • Fifth straight game with at least three 3FGs, the longest stretch in his career.
March: Sensational second half in the comeback win at Boston College as he scored 16 of his 18 points • Missed all four of his field goal attempts in the first half, then hit 6 of 7 in the second • Tied his season and career high with three steals • Hit two three-pointers - the first cut BC's lead to six and the second gave Carolina a 71-67 lead • Won UNC's defensive player of the award for the second time • Scored 16 points, including a key basket with 3:03 to play that tied the game at 68-all, in the win at Duke.
ACC Tournament: Earned first-team all-tournament honors for the second year in a row after averaging 19.3 points, 5.7 rebounds and 2.7 assists per game • Shot 57.9 percent from the floor (22 of 38) and 50 percent from three-point range (8 of 16) • Scored a team-high 24 points on 10 of 13 shooting from the floor and added four assists and two steals in the championship game vs. Clemson • Most points by a Tar Heel in an ACC final since Jerry Stackhouse had 24 in 1995 • Three-point play with 15:35 to play broke a 49-all tie and gave UNC the lead for good • After UNC built a 13-point lead, Clemson scored eight straight points to close with five, but Ellington made a jumper from the left wing with 6:17 left to thwart the Tigers' rally.
