CHAPEL HILL - The University of North Carolina men's basketball program has signed Harrison Barnes, a 6-7 forward from Ames, Iowa, to a National Letter of Intent. The prep senior will join the Tar Heel squad for the 2010-11 season.

Barnes plays for Coach Vance Downs at Ames High School. Last year, Ames went 26-0 and won the 4-A state championship.

"He is a great student, a big-time player, and he has a tremendous amount of self-discipline," says Carolina head coach Roy Williams. "Harrison is very talented.

"He's a tremendous scorer, a tremendous basketball player. He knows how to play. He can really shoot and he can put the ball on the floor. It's like Coach (Dean) Smith would say about Tiger Woods - he's got the total package."

Barnes is the third high school senior to sign a Letter of Intent this week to play for the Tar Heels. He joins Reggie Bullock from Kinston, N.C., and Kendall Marshall from Dumfries, Va., both of whom signed on Thursday.
