    Turned his career around in the spring with a solid set of practices. Is working hard to maintain a good playing weight and conditioning level. Has a lot more confidence in his abilities than he did a year ago. Picked up the new blocking schemes. Can be a very physical player if he plays with confidence. Should begin the season as the starter at right tackle. Has played in 18 games at Carolina. Has seen action at offensive guard and tackle. Appeared in three games at left tackle in 1999. Played against Virginia (season-high 14 snaps), Wake Forest and Duke. As a sophomore, he started all 11 regular-season games at left guard. Shared the position with Mike Gimbol. Played on 475 snaps with a high of 58 against Stanford and Clemson. Played at least 28 snaps in every game. As a freshman in 1997, he played against Maryland, TCU, Wake Forest, Duke and Virginia Tech in the Gator Bowl. Was red-shirted in 1996. Competed in the 1999 ACC Track and Field Championships in the shot put. Finished third in the indoor championships (54-0) and third in the outdoor meet (52-8 3/4). Was second in the shot put at the 1998 ACC outdoor meet with a put of 56-4 1/2.

    Dislocated a bone in his foot three games into his senior season. Did not play the rest of the season. Had 42 tackles, including three quarterback sacks, as a junior. Registered 14 tackles, including two sacks, in three games as a senior. Coached by Bill Dulin. Was the conference and western region champion in the shot put. Placed third in the state in 1995 in the outdoor shot. Won the state indoor shot put title in 1996. Grew up in New Rochelle, N.Y. and moved to Charlotte prior to his sophomore year.

    Born James E. Wagstaff on Feb. 18, 1978, in New Rochelle, N.Y. Majoring in Afro-American Studies. Favorite pro teams are the New York Knicks and New York Yankees. Favorite athletes are Vince Carter and Roy Jones Jr. Wants to improve his run blocking this year. Favorite other sport is boxing. Weighed 10 pounds, 11 ounces at birth.
