NFL Update: Week 8

Two former Tar Heels from the 2001 Peach Bowl squad turned in big defensive performances Sunday. David Thornton recorded a sack, forced a fumble and returned a interception for a touchdown in a big win for the Panthers. Julius Peppers registered seven tackles, a sack and forced a fumble in the Titans first victory. Sam Aiken, New England- 7th year wide receiver and Patriots in a bye this week but hosts the Dolphins next week. Ethan Albright, Washington- 38-year-old deep snapper and the Redskins are off this week before traveling to the Georgia Dome next week to take on the Atlanta Falcons. Kentwan Balmer, San Francisco- In addition to posting one tackle, the second year defensive tackle tallied one kickoff return for 3 yards as San Francisco fell 18-14 to Indianapolis. Dre’ Bly, San Francisco- Veteran defensive back recorded one tackle as the 49ers dropped a close 4-point contest to the Colts. Jason Brown, St Louis- Starting center blew open huge holes for tailback Stephen Jackson, as he racked up rushing yards at a 6.8 yards per carry clip, helping the Rams end their seven game winless skid. Alge Crumpler, Tennessee- Nine-year veteran tight end returned one kickoff for 5 yards and pulled down two receptions for 14 yards, while the Titans rolled 30-13 at home over the Jaguars. Greg Ellis, Oakland- Pro bowl defensive end posted one tackle as the Raiders dropped a 24-16 contest at San Diego. Brooks Foster, St Louis- Rookie wide receiver, who was the Rams’ fifth-round pick this year, is on injured reserve after ankle surgery.
Madison Hedgecock, New York Giants- Fullback led the charge as the Giants compiled 141 total rushing yards in a 40-17 losing effort to the Eagles. Jesse Holley, Dallas- Wide receiver is listed on the Cowboys’ practice squad. Vonnie Holliday, Denver- Veteran defensive end notched one quarterback hurry, yet the Broncos fell 30-7 to the Ravens. Hakeem Nicks, New York Giants- Starting wide receiver, the Giants’ first round pick, continued his stellar rookie season, reeling in 4 catches for 53 yards at a 13.3 yards/catch clip. Willie Parker, Pittsburgh- Sixth-year running back has an off week, and the Steelers will play at Denver in Monday night action next week. Julius Peppers, Carolina- Former All-America defensive end did a little bit of everything, racking up two tackles, one sack, one forced fumble, and one interception and touchdown return as the Panthers cruised to a 34-21 victory at Arizona. Richard Quinn, Denver- Tight end, who was selected by the Broncos in the second round of the 2009 draft, saw some playing time as the Broncos dropped their first game of the 2009 season to the Ravens. Jeff Reed, Pittsburgh- Veteran kicker and Steelers in a bye this week, before Monday night matchup against the Broncos next week. Garrett Reynolds, Atlanta- Rookie offensive tackle will travel to New Orleans and the Super Dome for Monday Night Football later tonight. Jeff Saturday, Indianapolis- Three-time Pro Bowl center anchored the Indianapolis line, giving Peyton Manning time to shred the 49ers secondary for 347 yards. Gerald Sensabaugh, Dallas- Starting safety helped the Cowboys win their third straight over Seattle by posting five tackles and a pass deflection. Ryan Sims, Tampa Bay- Starting defensive tackle and the Bucs have a much needed bye but will be back in action when the Packers come to town next week. Brandon Tate, New England- Rookie wide receiver had a bye this week. Hilee Taylor, Carolina- Second-year defensive end saw action in Carolina’s 34-21 win over the Cardinals Sunday. David Thornton, Tennessee- Starting linebacker led the team with seven tackles to go with one sack and one forced fumble as the Titans held the Jaguars to 13 points. Greg Warren, Pittsburgh- Deep snapper and the Steelers were out of action this week on a bye. Wallace Wright, New York Jets- Veteran special teams ace assisted on one tackle as the Miami Dolphins got the better of the Jets 30-25 in New York on Sunday. |
