Carolina Golfers Tied For Seventh At NCAA West Regional

BREMERTON, WASH. - The University of North Carolina men's golf team is tied for seventh place after the first round of the NCAA West Regional. Carolina fired a seven-over-par 295 total at Gold Mountain Golf Club's Olympic Course, a par 72, 7,111-yard layout. The Tar Heels are just six strokes behind first-round leader Oregon. "We played a very solid round of golf today, but we let things get away from us a little on the back nine," says Carolina head coach John Inman. Junior Chase MacFarland, from Savannah, Ga., led Carolina in the first round after firing an even par 72 and is tied for eighth place. Two Tar Heels fired a one-over-par 73 and are tied for 19th place - Henry Zaytoun III, a freshman from Raleigh, N.C., and Reed Darsie, a senior from Chapel Hill. Freshman Kevin O'Connell, from Cary, N.C., carded a five-over 77 and is tied for 82nd place while senior Barden Berry, from Kinston, N.C., shot 80 and is tied for 120th. Oregon leads the field of 27 teams after firing a one-over-par 289. Three teams are deadlocked in a tie for second place with 291 totals - Southern California, UCLA and Washington. Pepperdine is in fifth place after carding a 292 while Saint Mary (CA) is sixth with a 294 and Carolina and Clemson are tied for seventh place at 295. Rounding out the top 10 are Stanford at 296 and Texas at 11-over 299. Joey Benedetti of Oregon fired a three-under-par 69 to grab the individual lead after Thursday's play. Eric Shriver of Pepperdine is just one stroke back at two-under 70. Five players are tied for third place at one-under 71 - UCLA's Kevin Chappell, Stanford's Rob Grube, Washington's Nick Taylor, Oregon's Isaiah Telles and Wisconsin's Dan Woltman. Carolina's MacFarland is among 11 players tied for eighth place at even par 72. The 54-hole event continues through Saturday. Live scoring throughout the tournament is available on Golfstat.com. The top 10 teams and top two individuals not on those 10 teams advance on to the NCAA Championship to be played May 28-31 at Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex, Kampen Course, in West Lafayette, Ind.
