Tar Heels Finish 13th at Gary Koch Intercollegiate

Tampa, Fla. - The University of North Carolina men's golf team fell from eighth place to finish in 13th place at the Gary Koch Intercollegiate after struggling to a 305 total in the final round of play. The Tar Heels finished 10-strokes over par and 40-strokes behind the team champion with an 874 team total. Florida State captured the team title with a 30-under-par 834 total and set a new 54-hole team tournament record. Carolina recorded one eagle, 41 birdies and 173 pars throughout the weekend. Junior Henry Zaytoun III led the Tar Heels for the second time this season. Zaytoun, a Raleigh, N.C. native, fired the Tar Heels lone under-par total, finishing at one-under-par and tied for 24th place. Jack Fields, who fired one eagle in the tournament, and senior David Holzworth tied for 43rd place at three-over par. Freshman Michael McGowan finished in a five-way tie for 51st. McGowan, from Southern Pines, N.C., recorded a four-over par 76 on Sunday for a five-over-par 221 total. Kevin O¹Connell placed 78th at 18-over-par. Auburn's Kyle Kopsick added his name to the record book on Sunday when he set a new 54-hole individual tournament record. Kopsick won the tournament after firing a 15-under-par 201 total. The record was previously held by the University of Florida's Matt Every. Every set the record in 2003 when he shot a 205. Kopsick fueled his tournament victory in the second round when he carded a 63, the weekend's low round. Florida State¹s Seath Lauer took second place with an impressive 13-under-par 203 total and LSU's John Peterson captured third with a 12-under-par 204 total. In the team standings, Texas Tech finished second at 14-under par and the University of Virginia and the University of Florida shared third. The Gary Koch Intercollegiate was held at the Old Memorial Golf Club in Tampa. The par 72 course features a 7,389-yard layout. The team tees off next at the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate on Oct. 16.
