Jim Buczek is in his seventh year as a member of the Tar Heels' men's lacrosse coaching staff. Buczek rejoined the Tar Heel staff for the 1995 season after serving as a volunteer assistant coach at UNC during the 1993 season. During that 1993 season, Buczek played for the Green Turtle Lacrosse Club and was invited to summer tryouts for Team USA. During the 1994 season, Buczek was an assistant coach at Princeton University and while there he helped lead the Tigers to the 1994 national championship. One of the best defensive midfielders to ever play Division I lacrosse, Buczek coaches the Tar Heel midfielders, serves as the team's offensive coordinator and heads up North Carolina's recruiting efforts. Those efforts paid off handsomely for UNC last year as UNC garnered one of the nation's top freshman classes this year. Buczek is a 1992 graduate of the University of North Carolina and was a four-year letter winner as a Tar Heel under Coaches Willie Scroggs and Dave Klarmann. As a senior, Buczek won the U.S Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association's Lt. Don McLaughlin, Jr. Memorial Award as the outstanding midfielder in NCAA Division I. He was a first-team all-America in 1992 and a second-team all-America on UNC's NCAA championship team in 1991. The 1989 Atlantic Coast Conference Rookie of the Year, Buczek was first-team All-ACC in 1990 and 1992. In addition to playing on the 1991 NCAA title team, Buczek played on four Carolina teams which won Atlantic Coast Conference crowns. A native of Columbia, Md., Buczek finished his Carolina career with 41 goals and 32 assists. He was also credited with 255 ground balls. He won 102 of 200 career faceoffs, a percentage of .510 and had 116 takeaways to his credit. He finished his career fifth on the North Carolina all-time charts in both ground balls and takeaways but since has been responsible for coaching players who have passed him on the career charts. Buczek is married to Mary Jones Buczek, head women's volleyball coach at Wake Forest University and a former assistant UNC volleyball coach. The Buczeks became parents for the first time at 2:30 a.m. on Saturday, January 29, 2000 when son Quinn Thomas weighed in at nine pounds even. |
