Late Goal Lifts No. 4 Maryland Past No. 2 Carolina, 1-0
Sept. 25, 2009
COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Kevin Tangney's 89th-minute header snapped a scoreless tie and lifted No. 4 Maryland past No. 2 North Carolina, 1-0, Friday in a meeting of Atlantic Coast Conference leaders at Ludwig Field. The Terrapins improved to 5-1-1 and 2-0-1 in the ACC with the victory, while the Tar Heels dropped to 5-1-1 and 2-1-0 in league action with their first loss of the season. With the match heading towards overtime, Maryland keeper Zac MacMath's free kick found the head of a Carolina defender, and the ball deflected towards Tangney in the box. He sent a header into the right side of the net and past UNC goalkeeper Brooks Haggerty for the game-winner. Carolina held possession for much of the match and posted a 10-7 edge in shots. Sophomore forward Billy Schuler paced the Tar Heels with three shots, including two on goal. He misfired on a chance to give UNC a second-half lead when he sent a penalty kick right of the goal in the 51st minute. Schuler, who had posted five points in the previous two games, was taken down in the box to set up the penalty chance. The Tar Heels had five shots in the first half to just three for the Terrapins. Haggerty's lone save on the night came in the first half, and UNC midfielder Cameron Brown also stopped a potential Maryland goal in the opening period. MacMath made three stops for the Terps, who drew a Ludwig Field record crowd of 6,946 Friday. The Tar Heels return to action Tuesday, Sept. 29 at Radford at 7 p.m.
