    With preseason training underway for the 2005 Major League Soccer season, TarHeelBlue.com takes a look at the 14 former Tar Heels that are active in either MLS or abroad. Recent happenings include the debuts of Tim Merritt, Marcus Storey and Jamie Watson with their new clubs and the trade of all-star defender Eddie Pope to Real Salt Lake.     Gregg Berhalter, Defender, Energie Cottbus (Germany)
    U.S. National Team defender is playing his fourth season with Energie Cottbus • Named the team's captain prior to the 2004 season.

    Chris Carrieri, Forward, Colorado Rapids
    Enters his fourth MLS season and returns to the Rapids after a one-year absence • Signed by the Rapids from the Rochester Rhinos of the A-League on January 31, 2005 • Played one year in A-League before returning to Colorado.

    Matt Crawford, Defender, Colorado Rapids
    Beginning his third MLS season • Played in all 30 games a year ago and made 28 starts • Helped lead the Rapids to the 2004 MLS Playoffs • Had one goal and four assists last season.

    Chris Leitch, Defender, NY/NJ MetroStars
    Entering his fourth MLS season and third with the MetroStars • Started 29 games last season and had two assists.

    Tim Merritt, Defender, D.C. United
    Entering his rookie season • Selected with the No. 48 overall pick of the 2005 MLS SuperDraft.

    Logan Pause, Defender, Chicago Fire
    Entering his third MLS season • Played in 21 games and made 19 starts in 2004 • Tallied two assists on the season • Season ended early in September due to a stress fracture in his right foot.

    Eddie Pope, Defender, Real Salt Lake
    Three-time MLS Cup champion entering his 10th season • Traded from NY/NJ MetroStars to expansion Real Salt Lake on Feb. 1, 2005 • Named to four Best XI squads and the named the 1997 MLS Defender of the Year • Started all 22 games for the MetroStars in 2004.

    Eddie Robinson, Midfield/Defender, San Jose Earthquakes
    Entering his fifth MLS season, all with San Jose • Saw action in eight matches a year ago and made six starts.

    David Stokes, Defender, D.C. United
    Entering his third MLS season • Played in 11 matches last season and made three starts • Scored a goal versus C.D. Municipal in an international friendly.

    Marcus Storey, Midfielder/Forward, Columbus Crew
    Beginning rookie season • Selected with the No. 20 overall pick of the 2005 MLS SuperDraft.

    Carey Talley, Defender, Dallas Burn
    Entering his eighth MLS season and second in Dallas • Started 19 of 23 games a year ago and tallied one assist.

    David Testo, Forward, Columbus Crew
    Enters his second season in the MLS • Saw action in 16 games and made four starts in 2004 • Had one assist • Acquired by Columbus after winning A-League Rookie of the Year honors with the Richmond Kickers in 2003.

    Jamie Watson, Forward, Real Salt Lake
    Beginning rookie season • Selected with the No. 13 overall pick of the 2005 MLS SuperDraft.

    Kerry Zavagnin, Midfield, Free Agent
    Started 24 games for the Kansas City Wizards in 2004 and tallied two game-winning assists • Selected to MLS all-star game • Played six MLS seasons • Has had off-season trials with both Coventry City FC and Sunderland AFC in England.
