Freshman Enzo Martinez made an instant impact on the Tar Heel men's soccer team when he scored in the opening match of the 2009 season and has continued to contribute throughout the season. Martinez has played in all 20 of Carolina's games and recorded six starts. The Rock Hill, S.C., native scored three goals this season. He also assisted on four finishes including game-winning goals against ETSU and NC State in the regular season.
Martinez and the University of North Carolina men's soccer team look to return to the College Cup when they face Drake Friday at 6 p.m. for the final game at Fetzer Field this season.
TarHeelBlue.com: What do you consider to be your greatest strength as a soccer player?
Enzo Martinez: I just really like to work very hard and I will not quit.
THB.com: The majority of your teammates have postseason experience. What advice have they given you about the NCAA Tournament?
EM: That when it comes to the tournament time it's all about winning. It's when the big players step it up and when we need the results no matter how they come.
THB.com: How have you grown as a player this season?
EM: I believe I have grown as a player by my speed of play. I have been taught to not dribble as much, even though sometimes I get caught up on that, but I have improve on getting my head up more and finding the open players.
THB.com: What are the keys to the team's success this season?
EM: The keys are that we all play for each other. We don't look at each other and say anything negative. It's always positive. This team is special because everyone is positive to one another.
THB.com: What has been your favorite Carolina soccer moment thus far?
EM: I really liked preseason because I was getting to know new people and a whole new team and everyone made me feel very welcome.
THB.com: Who is the toughest defender you've faced this season?
EM: I have to say it's our back four in every practice. They are very hard to get through.
THB.com: Is the emotion in the locker room different now that every game could be the end of the season?
EM: Very much so. Now we have to go out there every game and give it more. The talks are kind of the same because throughout the whole year we prepared the same for every team but now it's the time to show.
THB.com: If you could improve one part of your game, what would it be?
EM: My shooting because to score a goal you need to shoot.
THB.com: What is your pregame routine?
EM: I try to calm myself. I give my ring a kiss and then cross myself in a religious way and go out there and have fun.
THB.com: Why did you choose Carolina?
EM: Because it's the best soccer program in the nation and an extremely good school.
