    Position:
    First Season

    Alma Mater:
    Tennessee, 1986

Carlos Garcia was named the new men's tennis assistant coach last fall by Head Coach Sam Paul. Garcia came to Chapel Hill from the University of Tennessee, where he was an assistant coach for the men's team from 1994 to 1999.

Following the 1998-99 season at Tennessee, Garcia was a finalist for the 1998-99 Assistant Coach of the Year award. Garcia helped lead two of Tennessee's players to earn All-American honors, and the team finished the 1998-99 season ranked 13th in the nation by the ITA. This feat is even more impressive when it is noted that nine of the 11 team members were either freshmen or sophomores.

A native of Knoxville, Tenn., Garcia has also coached on the ATP Tour, working with Chris Woodruff, whose ATP rank has been as high as 29th in singles. Garcia has coached Woodruff in the Davis Cup and the Australian Open. He also coached Woodruff to an ATP Tour title at the Hall of Fame Championships in Newport, Rhode Island.

Garcia is a 1986 graduate of the University of Tennessee, where he played tennis from 1982-1986 under Coach Mike DePalmer Sr. During Garcia's senior year, the Tennessee team won the 1986 Southeastern Conference Championship. Garcia was also an All-Academic SEC pick in 1985 and 1986.

Garcia replaced Trey Phillips, the Tar Heels' assistant in 1998-99. Phillips returned to his alma mater, the University of Texas, as an assistant coach.
