Tar Heels Fall Short Against #20 Auburn 4-1

ATLANTA, GA. - No. 20 Auburn defeated No. 18 North Carolina 4-1 Monday afternoon in the championship match of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Kickoff Weekend at the Bill Moore Tennis Center at Georgia Tech. With the win, the Tigers advance to the ITA Indoor Nationals in Charlottesville, Va., February 17-20. Playing their fourth Top 25 opponent in 10 days, the Tar Heels were not able to follow through on the momentum they gained by defeating 15th-ranked Illinois on Saturday. Carolina fell to 2-2 overall with the loss while Auburn stayed perfect at 4-0. The Tigers dominated doubles play to earn the team point and then moved ahead 2-0 on a win at #6 singles by Lucas Lopasso over Carolina's William Parker. Joey Burkhardt's 6-2, 6-3 win at #4 singles over Dennis Lengsfeld pulled the Tar Heels within a point at 2-1. But Auburn's Lukas Ollert rallied to win over UNC's Oystein Steiro at #5 singles in three sets and then Alex Stamchev clinched the win for AU at #2 singles. The Tar Heels return to Chapel Hill where they will host their home opener this coming Sunday at 12 noon against the No. 17 Texas Longhorns.
