ATHENS, GA. -
Former University of North Carolina men's tennis standout and assistant coach Don Johnson will be inducted into the Collegiate Tennis Hall of Fame May 21 during the 2008 NCAA Championships it was announced Monday by Dan Magill of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Hall of Fame Committee.
Johnson was Most Valuable Player of the 1990 ACC men's tennis championship team at UNC and then went on to a distinguished professional career, excelling in doubles. He won a pair of Wimbledon doubles championships, in mixed doubles in 2000 and gentlemen's doubles in 2001.
Johnson also played doubles on the United States' 2001 Davis Cup Team. He served for several years in the early part of this decade as an assistant coach to UNC head mentor Sam Paul.
Other players being inducted are Steve Denton of Texas, Jim Pugh of UCLA, Patrick McEnroe of Stanford, Robbie Weiss of Pepperdine, Chris Woodruff of Tennessee and David Di Lucia of Notre Dame.
Jerry Noyce of Minnesota is being inducted in the coach category and Tom Jacobs of the NCAA as contributor to the college game.
