Tar Heel Wrestling Team Gains A Coach
Oct. 21, 1999 CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The University of North Carolina wrestling team has added John Lange as a second assistant coach for the 1999-2000 season. Lange, a 1998 Penn State graduate, joins the Tar Heels after serving as both an assistant coach at Hofstra University and a head coach for the Elite Wrestling Club of Hauppauge, N.Y., last year.
"John is a great addition to our wrestling program, and I'm looking forward to having him on my staff," says Carolina head coach Bill Lam. "He was a proven winner at Penn State and we look for him to bring that same dedication and attitude of success to Carolina."
Lange was a four-year dual-meet starter for the Nittany Lions who earned All-America honors and was Big Ten champion at 158 lbs. as a senior. Following the 1998 season, Lange was named Penn State¢s Outstanding Wrestler and was honored with the Nittany Lion Club's "True Grit" award. He posted a 79-38 career mark and his 25 wins by fall rank fifth all-time at PSU.
Carolina opens the 1999-2000 wrestling season on Nov. 20 at the East Stroudsburg Open in East Stroudsburg, Pa. The Tar Heels are the defending ACC champions and have won seven of the last eight conference titles. John Lange becomes the second assistant coach for the 1999-2000 season.
