    Position:
    Assistant Coach

For an example of a true student-athlete, Carolina's players need look no farther than the coaching staff. Ann Hancock, who is in her eighth season at UNC, excelled both on and off the court during her collegiate career at Wingate College.

A native of Elizabethtown, N.C., Hancock graduated magna cum laude from Wingate with a degree in English in May 1992. That July she was named one of 52 regional candidates for the second annual NCAA Woman of the Year award in recognition of her achievements in athletics, academics and community service.

In basketball, Hancock was a four-year all-conference and all-district performer and an NAIA All-America Scholar-Athlete. Wingate was 103-23 during her career, with three district titles and four trips to the NAIA national tournament. She served as team captain for three years and led the team in scoring as a senior with 19.9 points per game. Hancock also played volleyball and softball at Wingate.

Hancock was the 1991-92 NCAA Division II female winner of the Woody Hayes National Scholar-Athlete award, sponsored by the University Sertoma Club in Columbus, Ohio. She was the recipient of the 1992 South Atlantic Conference Presidential Award, presented annually to the top student-athlete in the conference.

In addition to her academic and athletic success, Hancock was active in volunteer work and served as senior class vice-president. She won the Budd E. and Ethel K. Smith Cup, which is awarded annually to the graduating Wingate senior who has made an outstanding contribution through leadership. In 1998, she was inducted into the Wingate Hall of Fame.

She ranks 15th on the all-time North Carolina high school scoring list and fifth since the adoption of the five-player rule in girls basketball.

She coached AAU basketball from 1990-92, when she was head coach of the 12-and-under Greensboro Emeralds and an assistant coach for the Emeralds' 16-and-under and 18-and-under teams.

A part of the UNC staff since 1992, Hancock helped coach the Tar Heels to an NCAA title in 1994 and to ACC Championships in 1994, '95, '97 and '98.

Hancock is working toward a master's degree in sports administration from UNC. Away from basketball, she enjoys traveling and working on her golf game.
