CHAPEL HILL --- University of North Carolina senior women's basketball forward Rashanda McCants appears to have likely suffered a concussion in Monday evening's NCAA Tournament second round loss to Purdue, head coach Sylvia Hatchell said today.

"Obviously Rashanda didn't have the kind of performance against Purdue that we have come to expect from her over her outstanding career," Hatchell said. "If she was suffering from the effects of even a mild concussion, that certainly would have affected her ability to perform at the high level she's used to. We have a fantastic medical staff and I know for a fact that they would not have not allowed her to continue playing if there was any indication that she was at risk."

McCants had six points on 3-of-15 shooting and five rebounds in 33 minutes.

"Our athletic trainer examined Rashanda after a play in which she was elbowed and held her out of action for a few minutes," says Dr. Mario Ciocca. "She was allowed to return to the game after passing several tests on the bench and she did not report a headache. In the two days since the game, she has not felt well. We've continued to monitor her progress and have determined that she likely suffered a concussion. She should be fully recovered in a few days."
