CHAPEL HILL --- The University of North Carolina women's basketball team will open its 2007-08 campaign Nov. 9 against North Carolina Central, the first of 19 home games on the slate, head coach Sylvia Hatchell announced Wednesday. The Tar Heels won a school record 34 games and a third straight Atlantic Coast Conference title in 2006-07, and advanced to their second straight Final Four.
UNC will appear on television 13 times in 2007-08, including seven nationally-televised games on ESPN, ESPN2 and Fox Sports Net. Six others will be shown regionally on FSN South, FSN Florida, Comcast SportsNet and NESN.
"I am thrilled to be playing another very exciting schedule this season," head coach Sylvia Hatchell said. "As always, the ACC will be among the nation's best conferences and we look forward to the opportunity to defend our title. We will also be playing a challenging non-conference schedule that this year will feature Tennessee and Connecticut on the road.
"We're also excited to be hosting three great events - the State Farm Hall of Fame Classic, the WNIC and the ACC/Big Ten Challenge. I think those events, along with our other home non-conference games and the high quality of our ACC opponents will give fans something to really look forward to."
The Tar Heels will open play with home exhibitions against Premier Players on Oct. 31 and the China National Team on Nov. 6. After the regular season opener against NC Central, Carolina will host the State Farm Hall of Fame Classic in the Dean E. Smith Center on Nov. 11. UNC will face Arizona State in the opener at 2:30 p.m., with Oklahoma taking on Maryland in the nightcap.
In addition to the State Farm Hall of Fame Classic, Carolina will also host two other events. Carolina will welcome Coppin State and Syracuse to Chapel Hill Nov. 16-18 for the Women's National Invitational Championship, and the Tar Heels will meet Purdue in the inaugural ACC/Big Ten Challenge on Nov. 29.
UNC will travel to Knoxville, Tenn., on Dec. 2 for a rematch of last season's national semifinal against Tennessee. The game will mark the fourth meeting in three seasons between the two schools, two of which came in the NCAA Tournament.
Carolina also makes a return trip to the northeast to face Connecticut on Jan. 21. The Huskies came to Chapel Hill last season, and Carolina prevailed 82-76.
The Connecticut and Tennessee games will be televised on ESPN2, as will the Purdue game and the Feb. 4 meeting with Duke. ESPN will air the Arizona State game, while the Maryland game on Jan. 26 and the season finale against Duke on March 2 will appear on Fox Sports Net.
UNC proved to be a significant national draw last season, as its home games against Tennessee and Duke were the two highest-rated women's basketball games on the ESPN networks in 2006-07.
Carolina opens ACC play at home against Georgia Tech on Jan. 5 in the first of six conference games to be televised on the Regional Sports Network. In addition to the conference road games and the Tennessee and Connecticut trips, UNC will make its annual visit to Myrtle Beach to face Western Kentucky on Dec. 20.
