Senior guard Juana Brown has been cleared to return to practice but remains questionable for Saturday's women's basketball game against Maryland after injuring her right knee in Carolina's most recent outing. The Tar Heels (3-3) open their Atlantic Coast Conference season Dec. 9 at 2 p.m. at Carmichael Auditorium against the Terrapins (6-1).

Brown twisted her knee just over five minutes into the Dec. 3 game against Notre Dame at Disney's Wide World of Sports Complex outside Orlando, Fla. She fell out of bounds while attempting to defend a lay-up by a Fighting Irish player and did not return to the game, which UNC lost 78-55.

Brown was diagnosed with a sprain of the lateral collateral ligament in her right knee, an evaluation confirmed after an examination on Wednesday by Dr. Tim Taft, UNC's Director of Sports Medicine. Brown returned to practice on a limited basis on Wednesday evening, although her knee remains stiff and sore.

Brown, a 5-11 player from Memphis, Tenn., has started all six games for the Tar Heels this season and is averaging 13.2 points, third on the team and 15th in the ACC. She was named a preseason candidate for the Naismith Player of the Year Award.
