Jackie Pereira, a three-time Olympian for Australia, is in her first year as a North Carolina assistant coach. One of the sport's legendary players, she was a member of the Australian National Team from 1986-96, playing on Olympic teams in 1988, '92 and '96. Australia won gold in '88 and '96 and finished fifth in '92. As a member of the national team, Pereira scored 109 goals in 175 international games. She was the first Australian woman to total 100 career goals and at one point had scored more goals than any woman in the history of international field hockey. In 1988 and '89 she was named to the World Eleven Team, recognizing her as one of the 11 best players in the world. She was inducted into the Australian Hall of Fame in 1998 and has received the Order of Australian Medal, presented by the Queen of England, for her services to field hockey. In 2000, she was a member of the Olympic Torch Relay leading up to the Sydney Games. A street in the Australian Olympic village was named in her honor, as was a hockey field in her home town of Willetton, Western Australia. She spent last season as an assistant coach at William & Mary, and joined the UNC staff in January of 2003. |
