Scholl Earns National, ACC Honors

GREENSBORO, N.C. - North Carolina senior Kate Scholl a back/midfielder from East Greenville, Pa., has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Field Hockey Player of the Week for the first time in her career. Following the announcement of the conference honor on Tuesday, Scholl was named National Player of the Week by Womensfieldhockey.com on Wednesday. Scholl scored a goal in each of the Tar Heels' wins against ranked teams last weekend. On Saturday against No. 13 Virginia, Scholl provided the third goal in a 3-0 win over the Cavaliers. The goal, which came on a penalty corner in the 67th minute, was Scholl's first score since the 2006 season. On Sunday against No. 6 James Madison, Scholl broke a scoreless deadlock and put the Tar Heels up for good with her gamewinner in the 57th minute of a 1-0 win. The goal, again on a penalty corner, was the eighth of her career. Scholl also played a key role in the Tar Heel defensive effort that registered back-to-back shutouts. She has started all 15 games this season.
The fifth-ranked Tar Heels, now 12-3 on the season, will visit No. 1 Maryland this Saturday for the match that will decide the ACC regular-season title. Both teams are 3-1 in league play entering the game, which is set for 1 p.m. at the Terrapins' Field Hockey and Lacrosse Complex.
