Tar Heel Women's Golf Team Ties For Fifth At LSU Classic

BATON ROUGE, LA. - The University of North Carolina women's golf team fired a one-under-par 287 in the final round of the LSU Golf Classic to finish in a three-way tie for fifth place. The Tar Heels finished with a six-over 870 total after carding rounds of 287-296 in the first two rounds. Freshman Allie White led the Tar Heels firing a four-under 212 total. White, from Lancaster, Ohio, fired an even par 72 in the final round after posting earlier rounds of 68, the low round of her collegiate career, and 72. This was her fifth top-25 finish this year. Freshman Catherine O'Donnell and senior Lauren Hunt both tied for 16th place at one-over 217. O'Donnell, from Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., fired a two-under 70 in the final round while Hunt, from Little River, S.C., carded a one-under 71. Sydney Crane, a senior from Jamestown, N.C., and Kate Thomas, a junior from Murwillumbah, Australia, both shot two-over 74 on Sunday. Crane finished with a 225 total to tie for 51st while Thomas posted a 229 and tied for 72nd place. Virginia fired a four-under-par 284 for an eight-under 856 total to top the field of 18 teams and capture the team title. Tulane was the runner-up five strokes back at three-under 861 after firing a 10-under 278 on Sunday. Host LSU finished third at three-over 867 and Arkansas finished fourth with an 869 total. Wake Forest and Louisville tied for fifth place with Carolina at six-over 870. Arkansas' Lucy Nunn won the individual title, defeating Virginia's Calle Nielson and South Carolina's Benedicte Toumpsin on the second playoff hole (hole #11). All three players were tied at the end of regulation play with seven-under-par 209 totals. Nannette Hill of Wake Forest finished one stroke back in fourth at six-under 210. Virginia's Whitney Neuhauser and Tulane's Daniela Holmqvist tied for fifth place at five-under 211 while Carolina's White and LSU's Jaqueline Hedwall tied for seventh place with 212 totals.
The 54-hole event was played at the University Club which features a par 72, 6,424-yard layout. The Tar Heels' next event will be the Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic to be played March 27-29 in Athens, Ga. |
