    COLUMBUS, Ohio - No. 11 Penn State defeated No. 9 North Carolina, 9-7 in the third game of the Big Ten/ACC Challenge. The Nittany Lions (5-4) had two goals scored by Emily Chambers and Kristen Burke. The Tar Heels (4-6) had two goals scored by Beth Ames and Melissa McCarthy. In the final game of the Challenge, No. 2 Maryland (10-0) defeated No. 16 Ohio State (7-2), 10-5.

    Penn State opened the scoring with the first three goals of the game. Colleen O'Hara started the scoring at 7:06. Chambers scored at 10:22, assisted by Katie Hartman. PSU made it 3-0 with a Katie Jeschke goal at 13:46. North Carolina responded with the next three-goal beginning with a free position score by McCarthy. At 17:44 McCarthy scored her second goal. Brooke Young, on a free position attempt, scored at 19:17 to tie the game at three. Penn State scored two quick goals with Kristen Burke scoring from Chambers at 21:02 and Stephanie Curnoles scoring at 21:18 to hold a 5-3 lead. The Tar Heels closed out the scoring in the half with an Ames goal assisted by Brooke Dieringer to have Penn State lead 5-4.

    The Nittany Lions opened the second half the another three-goal run. Shari Maslin started the run with a goal at 37:23. Second goals by Burke (40:37) and Chambers (47:43) gave Penn State an 8-4 lead. The Tar Heels responded with a free position goal by Ames, her second, at 53:56. North Carolina scored again at 56:08 with a Dieringer goal, assisted by McCarthy to cut the PSU lead to 8-6. The Nittany Lions made it a three-goal lead (9-6) at 58:16 with a free position goal by Jamie Donohue. The Tar Heels responded with a Lynne Quattrone goal at 58:53 on an assist from Dieringer to close to the final margin of 9-7.

     

     

    In goal for North Carolina was Katelyn Hoffman who recorded six saves for the Tar Heels. Penn State's Lee Tortorelli picked up 11 saves for the Nittany Lions in the win.
