CHAPEL HILL - The University of North Carolina and Duke women's lacrosse teams will host their annual South of the Border Tournament of exhibition games this weekend on Friday through Sunday, Feb. 6-8, in Chapel Hill and Durham, N.C. The field will feature four international teams and 10 collegiate squads from the United States.

The event, co-hosted by Carolina and Duke for over 10 years, will serve as a warmup for the 2009 World Cup, to be held in June in Prague, Czech Republic.

"We are excited to host the South of the Border Tournament every year, but this year should be especially fun," UNC head coach Jenny Levy says. "Because of the World Cup later this year, we have the opportunity to include an international component to the event. The scrimmages against international competition will be good tests for our Carolina team and the international clinic on Saturday morning will be enriching for girls in this area. It will be an opportunity to see some great teams and great women's lacrosse action. Hopefully we can provide some good weather and southern hospitality for these international teams and the college squads that will be here."

The South of the Border Tournament will feature four international teams -- the U.S.A., Wales, England and Haudenosaunee. American college teams slated to participate include North Carolina, Duke, Connecticut, Georgetown, James Madison, George Mason, Villanova, Mount St. Mary's, Limestone and Longwood.

On Friday Feb. 6, the Tar Heels will face the English National Team at 3 p.m. in Durham, N.C.

On Saturday morning Feb. 7 at Finley Fields in Chapel Hill, there will be a clinic for youths from third grade through high school coached by players from the U.S. National Team. For more information and to register, visit www.uslacrosse.org.

Later on Saturday, the following games will take place at UNC's Finley Fields and will be open to spectators:

  • 11:30 a.m. - England vs. Haudenosaunee
  • 1:30 p.m. - Wales vs. USA
  • 3:30 p.m. - Haudenosaunee vs. Wales

In case of bad weather, the games will be held at Henry Stadium in Chapel Hill.

On Saturday evening, Duke's Koskinen Stadium will host the following game open to spectators:

  • 6:30 p.m. - USA vs. England

On Sunday, there will be a full slate of games between college teams at UNC's Finley Fields. To view the complete schedule for the college portion of the 2009 South of the Border Tournament, download the schedule in PDF format (top of page).
