Washington, D.C. - University of North Carolina senior Christine McPike has been named one of five finalists for the second annual Tewaaraton Trophy, the Tewaaraton Trophy women's selection committee announced on Wednesday. The trophy is given to the nation's top player.

Wednesday's announcement is the latest in a long list of honors this season for McPike, who has been named ACC Player of the Year, ACC Tournament MVP and All-ACC this season. She ranks sixth in the ACC in goals and 10th in scoring.

The finalists have been selected from its list of 21 of the best female lacrosse players in the country. The finalists include Lauren Aumiller (Midfield) and Tiffany Schummer (Defense) from the University of Virginia, Rachael Becker (Defense) from Princeton University, Erin Elbe (Attack) from Georgetown University and McPike. The award will be presented to the top female and male lacrosse players on June 5, 2002 at a reception at the University Club of Washington, DC.

"Our 21 candidates had great seasons, but these five players really established themselves as the elite players in the country," said Georgetown head coach Kim Simons, who chairs the Tewaaraton women's selection committee. "We look forward to presenting one of these players with the second annual Tewaaraton Trophy."

The candidates for the Tewaaraton Trophy were selected by seven of the most respected head coaches in women's lacrosse; Simons (Chairman), Cathy Swezey from Vanderbilt, Julie Myers from Virginia, Chris Sailer from Princeton, Jen Ulehla from James Madison, Michael Daly from Stonehill College (Division II) and Missy Foote from Middlebury (Division III). The committee evaluates players by their on-field performance throughout the entirety of the season.

A winner from the five finalists will be chosen in a ceremony at the University Club on June 5, 2002, with all five female and male finalists and some of the biggest names in college lacrosse in attendance. Legendary U.S. Coach Jackie Pitts will present the trophy to the female winner and Oneida Nation member and former National Lacrosse League player Ron Hill will present the trophy to the male winner.
