Six Tar Heels Earn All-Region Honors

CHAPEL HILL - Six women's lacrosse players from the University of North Carolina have earned All-South Region honors from the Intercollegiate Womens Lacrosse Coaches Association, the IWLCA announced this week.

Junior defender Amber Falcone was one of 12 Atlantic Coast Conference players on the 16-member first team. Freshman attacker Corey Donohoe, senior defender Meg Freshwater, senior defender Jamie Hanssen, senior midfielder Erica LaGrow and junior midfielder Kelly Taylor earned second-team honors.

Joining Falcone on the first team were Claire Bordley (Virginia), Lauren Cohen (Maryland), Carolyn Davis (Duke), Megan Del Monte (Duke), Dana Dobbie (Maryland), Molly Ford (Georgetown), Ashby Kaestner (Georgetown), Kelly Kasper (Maryland), Laura King (George Mason), Kendall McBrearty (Virginia), Ashley McCulloch (Virginia), Caitlyn McFadden (Maryland), Aiyana Newton (Duke), Jordan Trautman (Georgetown) and Blair Weymouth (Virginia).

Joining the Tar Heel quintet on the second team were Brittany Berge (George Mason), Maggie Bridges (George Mason), Allie Buote (Maryland), Kaitlin Duff (Virginia), Caitlin Formby (Georgetown), Jordy Kirr (Georgetown), Mandy Friend (Richmond), Emma Hamm (Duke), Bridget Noon (Georgetown), Katie Pumphrey (Maryland) and Jamie Sellers (William & Mary).

Carolina reached the NCAA Tournament quarterfinals before losing 13-11 at Syracuse last Saturday. The Tar Heels went 13-7 in 2008 and advanced to the ACC Tournament semifinals after going 2-3 in the ACC regular season.

 

 

The IWLCA honored 128 student-athletes in Division I with inclusion on one of eight All-Regional teams, with each of the four regions, the Northeast, Mid-Atlantic, South, and West/Midwest naming a first and a second team. All 128 athletes are now eligible for inclusion on the IWLCA/US Lacrosse All-America teams, which will be announced on May 29. The IWLCA and US Lacrosse will honor the National All-Americas at an awards banquet on June 14, 2008 in Downingtown, Pa.
