    The University of North Carolina women's lacrosse team will open its 2012 season on Saturday by hosting Florida in a matchup of nationally-ranked teams. Both teams are ranked in the top five of the Intercollegiate Womens Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) preseason poll for '12, with the Tar Heels ranked No. 3 and the Gators at No. 4.

    North Carolina grabbed the No. 3 spot and defending NCAA champion Northwestern was No. 1 as the IWLCA released the preseason poll. Maryland, the 2011 runners-up, start in second while fellow 2011 semifinalist UNC comes in at third. Florida (which will pay a visit to Fetzer Field in the season opener for both schools on Saturday Feb. 11), and Duke round out the top five.

    Five current or former University of North Carolina womnen's lacrosse players were named to the 24-member U.S. women's national senior team roster for the North American Challenge Cup. Tar Heels on the squad include defender Kristen Carr (UNC '10), defender Amber Falcone ('09), midfielder Erica LaGrow ('08), defender Jenn Russell ('10) and midfielder Laura Zimmerman ('12).

    Tar Heels No. 5 In Preseason Media Poll

    The University of North Carolina was ranked No. 5 in the Inside Lacrosse deBeer preseason Media Poll for 2012, the magazine announced this week. Defending NCAA champion Northwestern was a unanimous choice for the top spot with all six first-place votes and 120 voting points overall.
