The University of North Carolina women's soccer team got a goal from junior forward Nikki Washington 27 minutes into the match and made it hold up as the No. 2 Tar Heels shut out No. 14 Tennessee 1-0 in the Texas A&M Weekend Soccer Invitational at the Aggie Soccer Complex. The Tar Heels improved to 3-0 on the season with the win after beating back-to-back ranked opponents in College Station.
The only goal of the match was produced by Washington who tallied at the 27:00 mark on a shot from 12 yards out into the right corner. It was Washington's first goal of the season and a game-winner for the junior from Mesquite, Texas. Washington also recorded the primary assists on the game-winning goals in UNC's first two wins of the campaign over Charlotte and Texas A&M. Washington's goal was assisted by UNC senior midfielder Yael Averbuch who fed a long ball cross field to free Washington for the goal.
UNC posted its first shutout of the season as senior Anna Rodenbough went the first 45 minutes in the goal for the Heels and made one save in the process. Ashlyn Harris came in at halftime and played the second 45 minutes to finish up UNC's first shutout of the campaign. Jamiel Johnson made five saves for UT while allowing one goal.
UNC outshot the Lady Vols 15-12 and both teams had two corner kicks. UNC outshot the Lady Vols, who fell to 1-2 on the season, 10-5 in the first half and Tennessee outshot the Tar Heels 7-5 in the second half.
Despite a combined 12 shots between the two teams in the second half, neither team was forced to make a save in the second half as all 12 shots were off frame.
Five days from now UNC will host the 2008 Nike/Carolina Classic at Fetzer Field in Chapel Hill. On Friday, No. 16 Duke will play Kentucky in the opening game at 5 p.m. followed by No. 2 North Carolina versus No. 4 Notre Dame at 7 p.m.
On Sunday, No. 16 Duke will play No. 4 Notre Dame at 1 p.m. and No. 2 North Carolina will play Kentucky at 3 p.m.
