Miami's Brittney Steinbruch scored in the 67th minute to hand seventh-ranked North Carolina its third 1-0 loss of the season Sunday afternoon before a crowd of 540 fans at Coral Gables, Fla. The loss marked only the seventh time in history the Tar Heel women's soccer team has dropped a regular-season match in ACC play.
UNC (7-3 overall, 1-1 ACC) outshot the Hurricanes 26-9 and had an 11-2 edge in corner kicks but only six of UNC's 26 shots were on frame and Miami's Lauren McAdam saved all six of those shots. UNC has now lost three 1-0 games this season while outshooting opponents a combined 55-13 in those three contests.
Steinbruch scored the only goal of the game for Miami as she tallied her 11th goal of the season at 66:55 off an assist by Jessica Wyble.
The three losses are the most in a season for UNC since 2000 when Carolina finished 21-3 while also winning a national championship.
The loss was the first for Carolina in ACC regular-season play since October 9, 2005 when Duke defeated the Tar Heels 2-1 at Fetzer Field. UNC is now 115-7-3 all-time in ACC regular-season matches.
Miami improved to 6-2-2 overall with the win and the Hurricanes are 2-0 in ACC play.
The Tar Heels will seek to bounce back into the winning column Friday when they host Clemson at 7 p.m. at Fetzer Field. It will be UNC's first home match in 26 days. Carolina finishes off the regular season with five of its last eight matches of the season at Fetzer Field.
